Hosea: Love Me, Or Else?

The book of Hosea is one of the most tender books in the Old Testament because it describes God as desperately trying to win over his wife who has become a prostitute. But what is often overlooked is that this book also describes what happens to us if we say "no" to God. Is the penalty imposed or is the penalty a natural consequence?
