God On Trial

"Why is there so much suffering in the world and what kind of God would allow it to happen? Universal questions about faith and philosophy are at the heart of God on Trial, which was inspired by the legend that a group of concentration camp prisoners conducted a mock trial against the Almighty God. From all walks of life, a physicist, a glove maker, rabbis, a law professor and at least one criminal weigh the evidence and offer thoughtful arguments taken from history, science, theology and personal experience."

Les Miserables

The 19th century novel by French author Victor Hugo has had several film adaptations, but this 1998 version with Liam Neeson is exceptionally well done. This movie is a beautiful illustration of the nature and power of the kingdom of God. Definitely a must-see!

Beyond the Gates

"Joe Connor has come to teach in Rwanda because he believes he can make a difference. When the school becomes a haven for thousands of Rwandans fleeing the genocide, Joe promises his brightest pupil, Marie, that the UN soldiers will protect her from the hordes of extremist militia baying for blood outside the school. But when the UN abandon the refugees, Joe and the school's headmaster, Father Christopher, face an agonising dilemma: should they leave or should they stand firm with the Rwandans. As the UN trucks force their way through the terrified refugees, Joe stares at the tear-stained face of Marie: what should he do? What would you do? Based on real events and filmed at the actual location where this story took place, [the movie is] an emotionally gripping, authentic and powerful recreation of a tragic real life story that took place during the Rwandan genocide in 1994."

John Wycliffe - The Morning Star

"John Wycliffe" is a dramatic biography of the life of the 14th century scholar and cleric who translated the Bible into English for the first time. Wycliffe found himself in the middle of religious, political and social conflicts. An Oxford scholar, one of Europe's most renowned philosophers, he was a defender of English nationalism against the power of the pope and a champion of the poor against the injustices of the rich. John Wycliffe taught that God's forgiveness couldn’t be bought with indulgences. He preached that the only true authority is the Word of God, and the Word could only be understood by all if the people could read it in their native tongue. "John Wycliffe" captures the trials and heroic struggles of this significant man of faith - the "Morning Star" of the Reformation.

Bruce Almighty

When life doesn't go his way, Bruce complains bitterly to God who ends of giving him absolute power. In the end, Bruce understands how difficult it is to run the world! There are some good lessons to be learned in this movie about the things that sometimes limit God's ability to fix every problem and to answer every prayer in the way we expect.

Luther

Luther's is a drama that still resonates half a millennium on. It's an epic tale that stretches from the gilded corridors of the Vatican to the weathered church door of a small South German town; from the barbarous pyres of heretics to the technological triumph of printing. It is the story of the birth of the modern age, of the collapse of medieval feudalism, and the first shaping of ideals of freedom and liberty that lie at the heart of the 21st century.

But this is also an intensely human tale, a story that hurtles from the depths of despair to the heights of triumph and back again. This is the story of a man who ultimately found himself a lightning conductor of history, crackling with forces he could not quite comprehend or control.

Hoop Dreams

This movie follows the lives of 2 high school basketball stars, William Gates and Arthur Agee. It is a great movie because it is intensely "real" and it seems that the movie is just as much about the basketball players family and friends. In a strange way, this movie is inspiring. Perhaps the most emotional scene is where Agee's mother learns that she scored an 89 on her nursing exam, the highest in her class. As she celebrates and embraces her teacher, she cries and says, "I didn't think I could do it. And people told me I wasn't gonna be anything."
